Weekly Roundup: Guest Post Solicitation Edition

We always like seeing guest posts on blogs, and you may know that we’ve written a few guest posts for other blogs ourselves. Most bloggers are open to guest postings, unfortunately few overtly solicit guest postings. So, here’s our solicitation: if you’d like to do a guest post for us, we’re open to the idea. Arcane Springboard used his new column at Critical Hits to address the current state of D&D, in response to the Escapist articles we linked last week.

Speaking of last week’s roundup, Robert Schwalb also posted a followup to his skill challenges article that we linked last week. He talks about dealing with skill challenges that “unravel in spectacular fashion.”

If you liked the tentacle minis we wrote about this week, check out the Silt Horror base modification Alphastream did at his blog this week.

And while you’re at the WotC Community site, be sure to check out Wrecan‘s monthly roundup of WotC Community blogs for December! We don’t usually do roundups of roundups, but we thought this one was worth a look.

Do you want to start DMing, but find it intimidating? Why not try DM bootcamp, as proposed by Gnome Stew. We agree that this program is great for honing (or learning) DM skills, especially since the stakes are low, as is the time committment.

In a couple of bits of non-D&D news, Purple Pawn listed their top 10 game news stories of 2011, and the New Year New Game initiative started by Gnome Stew, which is very similar to Dice of Doom‘s Play a New RPG Month featured last October.

Finally, we were thrilled to hear that the Ennies this year will be hosted by the Dungeon Bastard himself! Huzzah!

Blast From The Past (Weekly Roundup: New Year Edition)

Greywulf’s Lair gave us a new way of looking at level advancement, after a humorous retrospective on the differences in time between character levels that old editions of D&D offered.

Weekly Roundup: Talon of Umberlee Edition

This past Thursday, we ran our play group through the Lair Assault “Talon of Umberlee.” We will be giving a full report in a spoilerific edition of our next podcast, but we will say that the party was successful, and also had no deaths. Not for lack of trying on our part…

 Delta’s D&D Hotspot took a really fun (and comprehensive) look at the depiction of elves through the editions of D&D. Though it doesn’t include 4e, it’s always interesting to look at the history of the game, from whatever angle.

If you’re still scrambling to get gamers on your list a cheapo gift, try out the “Rollable Greeting Card” at Doctor Techno. While the results are… unpredictable, they’re good for a laugh.

Over at DMG 42, we were encouraged to add some mystery to our dungeons, and let players figure out pieces of the story by themselves (or not!). There’s also some cool comparisons to the original DOOM, which we also have fond memories of.

 

Finally, we were pleased to see this week that the Dice of Doom podcast is back. If you haven’t checked them out yet, do it already! (And no, we don’t like beards on our dwarven women, despite what early editions of the game implied…)

Blast From The Past (Weekly Roundup: Impending Holidays Edition)

Arcane Springboard over at This is My Game talked about how receiving the Red Box from his grandparents when he was a kid was more than just the gift of a game.  Made us think about how it’s important to bring new people into the hobby, and how D&D is more than “just a game.”

Weekly Roundup: Coming Up On 200 Edition

It’s crazy for us to think, but it seems as though we’re coming up on 200 posts. This one is 198 – it seems like just yesterday we were celebrating 100 – unfortunately, we won’t be doing a giveaway for 200 since we just did a giveaway for our 1 year anniversary. Hopefully, by pointing you to some articles we can distract you from that, and deflect some of the nerd rage.

Arcane Springboard had a great analysis of the “Peak/End” rule and how it applies to a gaming session and even a campaign. Check it out at This Is My Game.

If you’re looking for a design challenge this week, check out A Walk In The Dark. A treasure vault has been presented, and there’s a contest to populate it!

Daily Encounter has announced a new blog carnival. If you recall, we participated in “Winter is Coming” and “A Night In The Lonesome October,” and will be participating in this one as well. They also posted a great article this week by guest author @DigitalDraco entitled “Back to Basics.”

Initiative or What? had some ideas to “automate” monsters. Make some general action “bundles” and roll a die to see what they do. Check out the specifics, and weigh in on how you would use it.

Gamer Assembly had some general thoughts about 4e. Head on over there and weigh in with your own opinions. They’re a new blog, so show them some love!

Rules as UNwritten had some great ideas for challenging players at upper paragon and epic.

We’re not sure how we missed this one, but friends of the podcast Dice of Doom have been developing their own RPG entitled Goblins! Considering the fact that they’ve been sampling an RPG a month for over a year now, we expect the game to be very well thought out. And if there’s a Kickstarter for it, we’ll be sure to post it in the sidebar there.

If you’re looking for a free holiday-themed adventure that doesn’t include a “jolly old elf,” look no further than Skyland Games’ take on “A Christmas Carol.” Instead of taking a break over the holidays, break out the eggnog and dice!

Finally, The RPG Doctor had a great post this week on how to teach D&D in a one-on-one setting. We’ve been thinking a lot recently about one-on-one D&D with experienced players, so this was a great new angle.

Blast From The Past (Weekly Roundup: Big Excel Project)

NewbieDM gave his take on what a 1 player campaign might look like.  While it’s mostly conjecture at this point, we hope he actually tries some of his ideas, and shares that too.

Weekly Roundup: Loot! Edition

You’ve heard of Woot! right?  It’s a deal-a-day site that has several shootoffs (shirt.woot, wine.woot, moofi.woot, etc.) that offer a deal on some product every day.  Well, just this week, we discovered a new deal-a-day site like Woot!, except dedicated to all things gaming.  The site?  Loot!  Check it out now (there won’t be a deal today because they don’t post on weekends).  And thanks to Thadeous of This Is My Game for the link.  Oh and also, on a totally unrelated note, you can vote for the Ennies here.

Dice of Doom had some great ways to scale back the wealth of the PCs in your game without sparking a mutiny.  We especially like the “con man” idea.

Neogrognard posted a few reasons why he feels 4e threw itself under a bus.  Agree or disagree, this article is worth a read.

A Character For Every Game posted a roundup of maps from around the blogosphere.  If you’re as into maps as he is, check it out.  It’s a great source of bloggers who regularly post maps to steal.  We love a good roundup!

TheSheDM proposed a really cool technique for making encounter maps on your erasable mat.  Be sure to read the comments at the bottom, there are some great ideas there, too. We will definitely be trying this one.

And finally, something so awful, it’s awesome.  Check the link in this post from Joe the Lawyers Wondrous Imaginings for a teaser video created by TSR back in the 90’s.  Apparently, they were dabbling in board games that are played alongside a VHS tape.  Thanks YouTube!

Weekly Roundup – Gamma World Thoughts Edition

Instead of our usual random thoughts, we thought we’d open with a thought provoking quote from over at Grognardia this week: 

As I’ve now said at some length over the course of many posts, I don’t think Gamma World is any more inherently silly than any other RPG. What it is, however, is fairly demanding on the imaginations of referees and players alike. I think Gamma World is so often treated as a joke because it’s so much easier to do so than it is to try and make some sense of the often-bizarre elements it generates through the use of random tables (not to mention the equally bizarre elements it simply presents straightforwardly). Looked at this way, I feel a lot less annoyed at the subsequent history of the game than I originally had, but I’m more … disappointed? … that so few gamers have seen Gamma World for what it can be: a real workout for the imagination — not to mention a lot of fun.

Now, on to the articles….

We thought we’d start by mentioning Purple Pawn‘s weekly list of Kickstarter game projects.  You might also find other new games you’d like to try over there, since it’s, you know, a general gaming blog.

Over at This Is My Game, Eldritch Reverie decided to update the Wizard spell Cloudkill.  It did seem underpowered when compared to Stinking Cloud, and we like what he did to make it more powerful.

For all you math nerds out there, Dice of Doom posted a link to an article discussing the reason you feel like you roll more ones than statistics might suggest.  Hint: it’s because you do.

Intwischa (like this: Int Wis Cha… get it?) posted some tips on how to run a better 4e game.  Caution: if you’re a “play by the rules” type, this article may make you angry.  Or shake your head.  That’s ok, there’s plenty to think about there, and everyone could take to heart one or two of the tips.
